Molecular diagnostics and point-of-care (POC) testing often rely on fluorescence-based assays for detection and quantification of biomarkers used for identifying pathogens and viral load monitoring.

ZEONOR ® Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) offers the combination of unsurpassed low fluorescence, high optical transmission, high purity and precision moldability, promoting improved fluorescence-based in-vitro diagnostic device capability.

Microfluidics and flow cell: Precision-molded ZEONOR Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) and high-quality ZeonorFilm™ are the building blocks in creating fluidic-based consumables for use in applications such as digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) and rapid pathogen detection.

Cell culture and well plates: The inert chemistry and high purity of Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) offer an exceptional platform for which cell growth and cell-based assays can be performed.

A broad range of ZEONOR Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) and ZeonorFilm grades are available.

The Lowest Autofluorescent Injection-Moldable Plastic

Low Autofluorescence

ZEONOR Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) offers the lowest fluorescence of any injection-moldable thermoplastic, and is a suitable replacement for glass when moving from lab scale to production scale or when performance improvement is needed with your current plastic.

Fluorescence Spectrum (emission, excitation) comparison: ZEONOR (lowest), Cyclo Olefin Copolymer (COC), Polystyrene.

Glass-Like Optical Properties

ZEONOR optical polymers exhibit glass-like transparency from UVA through near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths.

Low Moisture Permeation

ZEONOR Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) is a better barrier to moisture permeation compared to conventional plastics, which promotes stability of reagent concentrations and longer device shelf life of moisture-sensitive compounds.

Inert/Nonreactive Surface

The low surface energy and hydrophobic nature of ZEONOR Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) contribute to very low protein binding for improved PCR and flow cytometry efficiency. When surface functionality is desired, the ZEONOR Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) surface can be activated using standard industry practices, such as corona or plasma treatment.

High Molding Precision

Microfluidic devices require precise and consistent replication of fluidic channels, posts and other microstructures for proper function and liquid transport. Maintaining a high degree of flatness is critical for imaging applications and device assembly. ZEONOR Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) is able to achieve greater resolution and repeatability in mold replication than are other plastics.

High Purity

ZEONOR Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) is an extremely pure resin containing less-than-detectable residual metals and no low-molecular-weight additives or process aides. Compared with conventional polymers, assay reagents stored in devices made from Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) have low risk of contamination from leaching, offgassing or extractables.

Chemical Resistance

ZEONOR Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) demonstrates excellent chemical compatibility with most reagents used in diagnostic reactions.

Acids (HCl, HNO3, H2SO4) Good
Bases (NaOH, NH4) Good
DMSO Good
Hydrogen Peroxide Good
Ethylene Oxide Good
Polar Solvent (IPA, MeOH, EtOH, acetone) Good
Nonpolar Solvent (hexane, toluene, limonene) Poor
Hydrocarbon Oil Poor
Fluorinated Oil Good
Silicone Oil Good

ZeonorFilm

In addition to ZEONOR Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) resin, ZEON manufactures high-quality Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP)-based optical films. They provide the same chemical and optical advantages offered by ZEONOR Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) resin. ZeonorFilm is well suited for use in both imaging applications and sealing Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP)-based fluidic devices. ZeonorFilm is offered in a range of standard thicknesses, from 13 microns to 188 microns.
