ZEONEX® Cyclo Olefin Polymer (COP) allows for high moisture barrier flexible packaging for medical and pharmaceutical applications including IV bags, TPN bags, blister packaging, and overwrap bags.

ZEONEX is a high transparency, non-halogen containing plastic that enables replacement of PVC while providing 3x enhanced moisture barrier as compared to polypropylene. Additionally, ZEONEX has excellent compatibility with drugs, including proteins and peptides.

For barrier films, ZEONEX is commonly utilized in a multi-layer construction together with polypropylene or polyethylene. ZEONEX can be utilized as either the drug contact (inner) layer or as the middle layer for enhanced moisture barrier.

EXCELLENT MOISTURE BARRIER

ZEONEX has excellent barrier against moisture transmission. The moisture barrier is approx 3x that of polypropylene at equivalent thickness and more than 10x improved vs PVC. ZEONEX is lower cost than PCTFE films.

ULTRA PURE MATERIAL

ZEONEX is an extremely pure material with low out-gassing and residual metals. Residual metals content is less than 0.02ppm.

LOW ADSORPTION OF DRUGS AND PROTEINS

ZEONEX exhibits low adsorption of drugs as compared to polypropylene.

Additionally, ZEONEX has significantly less protein adsorption than polypropylene, making it optimal for protein contact in applications including TPN/nutrition bags.

LOW HAZE, HIGH TRANSPARENCY

ZEONEX is an ultra-clear material. Its haze is ~ 0.1% (ASTM D1003 @ 300 microns) as compared to 2~3% for PVC and >20% for polypropylene. The result – a differentiated flexible film construction that enables improved visual inspection.

MULTI-LAYER CONSTRUCTIONS

When utilized in a multi-layer construction, ZEONEX provides improved barrier and drug compatibility while balancing strength, flexibility, and cost. The most common constructions utilizing ZEONEX and ZEONOR in flexible medical packaging are:

        - ZEONEX as drug contact layer:             ZEONEX (inside) // Polypropylene or LDPE (outside)
        - ZEONEX as moisture barrier layer:      PP (inside) // ZEONEX (middle) // PP (inside)

Both co-extrusion and adhesive lamination can be utilized for making multi-layer constructions. Please contact to ZEON for specific processing suggestions.
